You may have come across adverts or videos claiming to help you get taller by stretching. We thought we’d do some digging to see if there was any truth to this and if so, how do we get these height gains!
Statement - By stretching, you can increase the space between the vertebrae's in your spine to elongate your figure.
Answer – The disks between the vertebrae's of your spine contain water that can compress or relax making your shorter or taller.
This is why you are slightly taller first thing in the morning compared last thing at night. Throughout the day gravity and the stresses you put on your joints such as walking, running, jumping, carrying weights etc slowly cause these disks to compress.
You can be up to 2cm shorter in the evening vs morning
When you lie down, rest and sleep these disks slowly relax and return to their natural state making you taller. To answer the original statement, yes it may be possible that stretching can help to relax these disks making you slightly taller however it is thought to be negligible and short lived as they will compress again through daily activities.
Posture – A benefit of stretching or doing yoga can be improved posture, the stretches will help to break the bad habits you have formed and strengthen muscles you wouldn't usually use. Yoga focuses on alignment and just by taking time out of your day to do it, you are more likely to be mindful of your posture. Improved posture can increase your height by up to an inch as well as giving the appearance of looking taller through increased presence and confidence.
From my own experience, I would heavily recommend doing some yoga. It’s a great way of working your muscles, improving balance, engaging your core and increasing usable strength. There’s a great 30 day challenge here from ‘yoga by Tim’ which is perfect for beginners, check it out and let us know how you get on.
Another way of improving posture is with our posture corrector, it works by pulling back your shoulders creating a straight line from the crown of your head to your feet. It will hold you in place, comfortably giving you great posture without having to think about it. Wearing consistently from as little as 10 minutes per day will allow your body to adjust and form new habits. For more info check it out here.
